Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Like so many other young people in their twenties I loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The few years when the TMNT craze hit were truly golden for a child of 9 years old. The cartoon (and the comic book) kicked ass all over the place – don’t even try to deny it. TMNT video games, while not quite able to capture the pure coolness of the Turtles, have usually been fairly decent affairs. With the relaunch of another series of Turtles animated episodes, Konami has decided to push out another TMNT game for this fall, creatively titled, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

As far as I can remember all TMNT games have been firmly placed within the glorious (and occasionally tired) genre of action – this game is no different. But I don’t mean to be dismissive. While I would like to see somebody do something a little more inventive with the Turtles, Konami appears to be well on the way to making a damn decent game. For starters, the screen shots of this game are gorgeous – it looks like your playing an episode of the damn show (although I would have preferred graphics in line with the original animated run - SIGH). The graphics are not the only thing worth getting excited over. All the necessary requisites seem to be there: two player modes (both VS. and co-op), a variety of imaginative environments, special items and special attacks and  combat system that rewards those players who seek to master their inner ninja rather than simply blindly press buttons (ie. you better start discovering those combos). Best of all is the ability to play as (and against) such TMNT supporting characters as April O’Neil, Shredder, Baxter Stockman and my personal fave, Casey Jones. Konami seems to be aiming at making this game a more complex and deeper action game than your typical button-masher.  Let’s hope they can pull it off.
